Ultimo film hollywoodiano di D. Sirk e il suo più grande successo commerciale. Rispetto al romanzo (e al film di Stahl), le modifiche sono radicali “nell'ottica del fallimento, dell'insuccesso, dell'ambiguità” (A. Castellano), trasformandolo decisamente in un melodramma declinato al femminile. J. Moore (la governante) e S. Kohner (sua figlia) ebbero una nomination all'Oscar. “Per la prima volta grazie a Sirk mi sono sentita attrice e non una donna utilizzata per la sua bellezza” (L. Turner).
