Il suo funerale diventa un “circo mediatico”. Migliaia di fans arrivano a Memphis, e oltre 75.000 sono ammassati a Graceland, la proprietà di Elvis

Robert Kendall: Direttore della Memphis Funeral Home, organizza tutto il necessario per il funerale di Elvis Presley e decide che per Elvis venga utilizzata una bara identica ($ 8.000) come quella di sua madre Gladys Love Presley, che morì 19 anni prima di lui. Questa bara è fornita di una targa in acciaio inox da 2 a 4 pollici, necessario per l’identificazione.

A parte permettere a Lisa Marie Presley, che ha 9 anni, di mettere un piccolo omaggio all’interno della bara (un sottile braccialetto in metallo), Robert Kendall sconsiglia i familiari dal mettere cose di valore, nella bara.

I funerali di Elvis hanno luogo a Graceland con una cerimonia religiosa e la sepoltura. Una colonna di 14 Cadillac bianche con il carro funebre di Elvis guidato da Trent Webb, percorre le strade che da Graceland portano a Forrest Hill Cemetery. Il ministro officiante è il Rev. Bradley. Tra i presenti al funerale, ci sono anche Priscilla, Lisa Marie, Vernon e Minnie Mae Presley, Chet Atkins, Caroline Kennedy (che rappresenta il Rolling Stone Magazine) Ann-Margret con suo marito Roger Smith, Col Tom Parker, James Brown, Charlie Hodge George Hamilton, Ginger Alden, Linda Thompson, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Kahane che fa l’elogio funebre e Kathy Westmoreland canta Heavenly Father.
I portatori della bara sono Jerry Schilling, Joe Esposito, George Klein, Lamar Fike, Billy Smith, Gene Smith, Dr. Nichopoulous,

"Figliolo, il papa sarà con te presto. Papà sarà presto con te” piange Vernon Presley. Due anni dopo, ed esattamente il 26 giugno 1979, Vernon Presley morirà per uni attacco di cuore.

Alle 14, si è tenuto il servizio funebre di Elvis Presley, nella stanza della musica collegata con la sala da pranzo. Durante la cerimonia un quartetto gospel ha cantato “How Great Thou Art” e “Sweet, Sweet Spirit”. Dopo che erano state dette anche le ultime parole, gli ospiti hanno lasciato da solo, Vernon Presley, il padre del cantante. La macchina di Vernon Presley ha guidato la processione, quando subito dopo le 15.30 gli ospiti e i membri della famiglia hanno lasciato la casa. Alla macchina seguiva il carro funebre bianco che trasportava la bara. Il carro funebre era seguito dalla ex moglie Priscilla, il viso nascosto da un velo, tenendo per mano la figlia di 9 anni, Lisa Marie

Elvis continua con quel metodo iniziato in North Caroline: il contenitore per le richieste. Charlie Hodge raccoglie le richieste in un secchio e poi Elvis si impegna per soddisfarle. Ad un certo punto, durante il dinner show, per cantare Elvis si sdraia sul pavimento.

“Non riesco a credere che Elvis sia veramente morto” stava dicendo Alice Hovatar al benzinaio W.C. Greenwood, mercoledì 18 agosto, mentre stavano davanti a Graceland. Erano le 3.30 del mattino e un attimo più tardi le ragazze 19enni di Monroes, saberrero state uccise sul colpo fa un guidatore che si trovava sulla corsia vietata al traffico…………. Greenwood lo ha visto giusto in tempo, per saltare via dalla traiettoria

Dopo aver visto l’anteprima dello special della NBC, il Colonnello esprime il suo disappunto a Tom Sarnoff, perché nello show non c’è alcuna canzone natalizia, come era stato programmato.
In un pro memoria di due pagine, in cui tra le varie critiche pesanti per la scelta delle scene e la stupidità di alcuni pezzi, esprime il suo stupore che dopo tante chiacchierate, dopo tutte le sue concessioni e nonostante gli accordi contrattuali, l’unica cosa che gli era stata garantita non è stata mantenuta. Il pezzo natalizio deve assolutamente essere inserito nello speciale “altrimenti noi tutti perderemo un’atroce quantità di soldi per la promozione sia da parte della mia società, la All Star Show, che da altri intermedi e soprattutto dal fans di Elvis Presley.”
Se il brano non verrà inserito, dichiara il Colonnello, lo show può anche essere congelato fino alla prossima estate e la NBC “dovrà preparare un altro special natalizio per poter rispettare l’impegno contrattuale preso”. A quel punto viene inserita la canzone “Blue Christmas” come una cosa buttata lì per caso.

Adducendo a malattia, all’ultimo minuto Elvis vuole cancellare di due show di stasera, ma il Colonnello insiste che deve farli, perché non c’è stato un adeguato preavviso.
Per tutta la serata, Elvis guarda ripetutamente il suo orologio e già dalla mattina dopo, ogni cosa pubblicitaria dei concerti di Elvis è stata tolta, mentre sulla lobby c’è un piccolo cartello che dice “La parte restante del tour di Elvis Presley è stato cancellato, causa malattia”

IL PADRE DI ELVIS RINGRAZIA “Quello che ho visto, con gli omaggi a mio figlio, provenienti da tutto il mondo, ha rischiarato la mia angoscia…… Mi dispiace che non tutti coloro che sono venuti a Memphis, hanno avuto la possibilità di vedere la salma, ma non c’era abbastanza tempo……. Voglio esprimere la mia sincera e profonda simpatia alle famiglie delle ragazze coinvolte in questa riprovevole cosa, che è successa al cancello”.
